The John Maytham show got an email last week from one Adrian Skea regarding people that shower at gym do not seem to have the appropriate level of consciousness – asking what Virgin Active have in place to avoid this -
1. What does Virgin Active do to make sure clients don’t waste water? 2. What other initiative are in place to save water?
Email received: Dear John
I am a frequent “visitor” to the Virgin Active in Sun Valley as well as in Steenberg, where I train. I have frequently noted, and continue to note that folk that shower at gym do not seem to have the appropriate level of consciousness with respect to our current dire water situation and the water restrictions. This is either because these folk don’t care, or somehow being at gym and not at home means its somehow subconsciously someone else’s problem. Ideally Virgin should install those push button shower devices that once pushed dispense water for about 20 seconds and then you have to push the button again – less easy and convenient to stand and soak up the treat of a hot shower in an uninterrupted manner. Another option would be to turn off the hot water all together at the gym, but this is not practical going into winter and could be argued may affect gym attendance and membership.
Please can you try to petition Virgin Active management to take urgent additional measures to discourage members excessive water usage during showering.

Les Aupiais, Virgin Active spokesperson elaborates on their water saving measures.
We replaced a lot of shower heads that was one of the first few moves we made. We had those low, flow shower heads put in and that immediately reduced consumption.— Les Aupiais, Head of Strategic Communications at Virgin Active
Aupiais says they are not going to police people but they will raise an awareness. Aupiais adds that there is already a campaign to coerce people into thinking differently about their water usage.

Aupiais explains that while there are water restrictions in place, Virgin Active will not compromise on the hygiene of their patrons.
