Petitions are not just signatures but also a tool of civic activism

Talk Radio 702's, Azania Mosaka and Koketso Moeti, Executive Director at Amandla.Mobi interrogates the effectiveness of petitions to increase and improve civic activism.

Moeti says digital spheres sometimes aren't enough to create change on their own but are useful enough to enable and promote awareness.

She says her organisation, amandla.mobi is an independent, community advocacy organisation that seeks to build a more just and people-powered Mzansi.

To do this, she says, they are working to turn every cell phone into a democracy-building tool so that no matter where anyone lives, what language they speak, or what issues they care about, they can take action with others.

Sometimes your signature is enough.

Koketso Moeti, Executive Director at Amandla.Mobi

Moeti adds that her organisation often goes further than collecting signatures, saying people who sign up for petitions are sometimes engaged and consulted on how to take matters further beyond digital boundaries.

It is about sustained action in some instances.
