IEC still needs 3 million voter addresses

The Independent Electoral Commission is still racing against the clock to meet the Constitutional Court's deadline to have all information of voters' addresses before the end of June 2018.

Acting Chief electoral officer of the IEC, Sy Mamabolo, says the commission has been making significant progress.

He says when the ruling was made there were some 7 million voter addresses outstanding, but that number has been reduced to 3 million.

We are concerned that there is still that 3 million without addresses. The input here is to make sure that we meet the deadline of the Constitutional Court.

Sy Mamabolo, Acting Chief electoral officer of the IEC

To remedy the situation, Mamabolo says they've made available an online facility where these 3 million people can go and register.

He acknowledges that the majority of South Africans don't have access to the internet. They are therefore considering opening stations in areas where the majority of people who have not submitted the information live, as well as conducting door to door campaigns.

We now have to use available technology more wisely and more effectively.

Sy Mamabolo, Acting Chief electoral officer of the IEC

We don't have a lot of time, but we are confident that with the plans we have up our sleeves we will be able to have at least a substantial majority.
