Gender violence in the Spotlight

Did you know: Law allows you to get protection order on behalf of abuse victim

An exclusive on enca's current affairs show CheckPoint that aired on Tuesday, featured interviews with Karabo Mokoena's mother and friends recounting the stories of her abusive relationship with Sandile Mantsoe.

Mantsoe is accused of killing Mokoena and dumping her burnt body in Lyndhurst in Johannesburg last month.

Nhlanhla Mokwena, Executive Director at People Opposing Women Abuse (Powa) joined Talk Radio 702's Azania Mosaka to discuss the role of family and friends in not only showing support towards victims of abuse, but also how to deal with someone who cannot escape an abusive relationship.

Mokwena says she believes the South African Police Services (Saps) system has a victimising approach towards survivors. It is, therefore, important and helpful for the victim to be accompanied by someone who can support their statements, therefore, placing pressure on the police to act properly.

When an assault case is lodged, it is important for the police to immediately go and arrest the perpetrator because that then places the victim in less danger.

Mokwena explains that according to the Domestic Violence Act family members can apply for a protection order on behalf of the victim.

To make our systems work we need to make sure that the people who are responsible for implementing those systems are held accountable.

Nhlanhla Mokwena, Executive Director at People Opposing Women Abuse

Mokwena says although intervention from families and friends may prove to be helpful, it is still the abused victims decision to make to leave an abusive and harmful relationship.
