Master Class: The Humanities (help us to think critically)

Sarah Nuttall is Director of the Institute for Social and Economic Research in the Faculty of Humanities at University of Witwatersrand.

She says humanities focus on the practice of the imagination. She explains that the discipline is deeply invested in thought processes which are about imagining something that may not exist - or imagining the ways in which we now think of things that existed in the past.

I think it meets and fulfils our constitutional duties in this country. I think it is deeply generative in terms of being a better manager and a better person in a range of careers.

Nuttall adds that there's a term in the humanities called 'criticality' which refers to the capacity to look at a situation, to be given any situation and to be able to think about that situation out of the box and in a critical way.

She says she wishes that the humanities should be a core curriculum in any university.

Nuttall adds that she completely embraces the decolonial challenge.

I think the humanities are the place where we can most actively change the curricular and draw in black thought and black thinking.
