A suggestion by Cape Town officials to implement flexible working hours has sparked some controversy.
Professor Anita Bosch, associate professor at the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) says it could have a serious impact on employees and company productivity.
The City recently proposed plans to introduce flexible working hours, as well as remote working to reduce congestion on the City’s roads.
Bosch says while companies may be reluctant to make the change, there are indeed benefits.

She says there are things managers need to get their heads around.
What we do know is that flexible workers are in general much more happier workers. We also know productivity tends to increase, your measures have to be accurate and you have to have a number of technology features in place to monitor that.— Anita Bosch, associate professor at USB

What we think are potential limitations with technology, end up not being such huge limitation, so there is an element of up-skilling workers as well and moving them from manual into more skilled types of jobs.— Anita Bosch, associate professor at USB
