Civil groups call for national commission on gender-based violence

The Open Disclosure Foundation and other civil society partners have called on government to implement a national commission addressing the scourge of gender-based violence.

We are looking to create sustainable, longer-term spaces to find solutions and implement.

On Friday, civil organisations will join forces to march against violence on women and children, as a part of the #NotInMyName campaign.

Open Disclosure has pleaded with Police Minister Fikile Mbalula to attend the march and facilitate the creation of a national strategic plan.

The Open Disclosure Foundation is an organisation which supports to survivors of abuse, explains founder Andile Gaelesiwe.

Gaelesiwe says she founded Open Disclosure in 2002 as a space for herself and other survivors to share their stories and take action.

I am a survivor of sexual violence, twice. First time at the hands of my biological father and second time at the hands of tax driver.

Demonstrators will march from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Soweto Campus to the Regina Mundi Church.

Other civil groups taking part include Sonke Gender Justice and the Buhlebolwazi Foundation.
