Plans to switch traffic cops to essential services for 24/7 visibility

24 May 2017 6:23 PM

The Transport Ministry says the move will help increase the visibility of traffic cops on SA's roads, to better monitor safety.

Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi is pushing for traffic service jobs to be declared essential in order for traffic officers to work 24/7 hour shifts.

During his department’s budget vote speech in Parliament on Tuesday, Maswanganyi explained that the move would help increase the visibility of traffic officers on South Africa's roads, to better monitor safety.

Maswanganyi's spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi says that current legislation forces the department to pay over-time for 24 hour services.

Mnisi explains that if traffic officers were declared as essential services, they would have special requirements and conditions protecting their work.

On the current form, we have a skeleton staff that work because of financial constraints.

Mnisi maintains that there will be consultation with all stakeholders.
