Section 27's Thabang Pooe says tightening laws violence against women and children is not convincing enough.
During an Imbizo in Nyanga on Wednesday Police Minister Fikile Mbalula said he wants stronger laws protecting South African women.
Pooe says the problem lies with enforcement.
We do have quite comprehensive laws that offer protection for women and children, all the way from sexual violence, human trafficking, harassment laws, child protection laws. Part of the problem comes in with enforcement, from police not knowing some of the laws, all the way to people not knowing that these provisions actually exist and where to go when these incidents happen.— Thabang Pooe, Head of Policy Development and Advocacy at Section 27
There has to be focus on community based programmes that seek to target social norms and behavior changes in order to reinforce what is happening in the legal side.— Thabang Pooe, Head of Policy Development and Advocacy at Section 27
