Gender violence in the Spotlight

Tightening laws to curb crimes against women is not the answer - Section 27

Pooe says the problem lies with enforcement.

We do have quite comprehensive laws that offer protection for women and children, all the way from sexual violence, human trafficking, harassment laws, child protection laws. Part of the problem comes in with enforcement, from police not knowing some of the laws, all the way to people not knowing that these provisions actually exist and where to go when these incidents happen.

There has to be focus on community based programmes that seek to target social norms and behavior changes in order to reinforce what is happening in the legal side.
