Trade union Solidarity sets the record straight on Spur 'boycott'

Trade Union Solidarity says the organisation has not organised a boycott on Spur and that people are simply refusing to eat at the restaurant.

Spur CEO Piere van Tonder penned an open letter to the union saying that he cannot understand why the union is trying to arrange a boycott of his chain, after an incident in which a white man threatened a black woman.

Solidarity CEO, Dirk Hermann says he simply wrote an open letter of his own, relaying the general feeling of customers who feel estranged following the incident.

There is client base that feels estranged and (I) said listen, the way that spur acted against us is not acceptable and we want to talk to you because Spur simply does not listen.

Dirk Hermann, CEO of trade union Solidarity

Solidarity never said that we want to organise a boycott. I just wrote an open letter where I actually interpret the feeling I hear on social media, we are simply saying Spur be careful, you are in the process of estranging a very big part of your client base.

Dirk Hermann, CEO of trade union Solidarity

Hermann says Spur failed to address their customer's feelings on the matter.

The way that the people experienced that period is that Spur took a specific side... the mistake that spur then made was not to deal with that specific feeling, what they then did was to say to them you are a bunch of racists.
