Adult prostitution report by Justice Dept opts for continued criminalisation

The Department of Justice has released a law reform commission report on adult prostitution for public comment.

The report which has taken at least two years to complete is aimed at reviewing the fragmented legislative framework which regulates adult prostitution.

Barry Bateman was in Pretoria for the release.

Bateman says Justice Minister Michael Masutha states that the law reform commission’s preferred option is to retain a totally criminalised legal framework.

They looked at global models and there are four of them, there is the total criminalisation, partial criminalisation total decriminalisation and partial decriminalisation.

Looking at it of course from a South African perspective, looking at where we have high rates of poverty and looking at all these factors and what would be best suited to South Africa and they are essentially finding that decriminalisation is not suited or the best ideal for South Africa.

Micheal Masutha saying that this is just the recommendations of the law reforms commission, this has now been opened up to public comment.
