Phemelo Motene chats to creative parenting expert, Nikki Bush about why learning through play is important.

Aubrey Masango chats to creative parenting expert, Nikki Bush about why learning through play is important in early childhood development.

She focuses on the pre-school phase and says 'school-readiness' takes six years.

There are so many facets to preparing a child for school, but the easiest way to get children to acquire the foundational skills that underpin reading, writing, and mathematical literacy, is play.

Nikki Bush, creative parenting expert

Nikki chats about the best toys to choose and how to use them.

She says it is not only through books and computers.

Children are multi-sensory, they are human beings, and they acquire knowledge and experience through all their senses.

Nikki Bush, creative parenting expert

They need to experience with their entire physical body.

She recommends the 'pyramid of play' is a stacking game where wooden cubes are stacked on on top of the other, as well as nested inside one another.

This helps children learn shape, colour, problem-solving and much more.

It helps develop both concrete and abstract thinking.

Take a listen to Nikki Bush's tips on how to prepare your kids for school:
