ANC NEC divided on Zuma - Karima Brown

Political analyst Karima Brown says while conflicting reports have come out about what exactly transpired during a bid to unseat President Jacob Zuma at the weekend, it seems the party's highest decision making body is at a stalemate.

Zuma survived a motion of no confidence tabled at the meeting.

NEC member Joel Netshitenzhe raised the issue, calling on the president to consider stepping down.

According to Eyewitness News, it is also understood NEC members Joe Phahla, Paul Mashatile and Aaron Motsoaledi are amongst those that supported the call.

Amongst those against it were NEC members North West general secretary Dakota Legoete, Siyabonga Cwele, Lindiwe Zulu and Maite Nkoana-Mashabane.

I checked with people who actually attended the meeting from both camps, the ANC is in fact at a complete stale mate and that the ANC NEC is divided down the middle.

Karima Brown, Political analyst

There are different figures that are coming out but there were no less than 70 people that actually spoke on the matter, some were explicit in their desire to see the president step down from office and there were those that were depending him to the bitter end, and some that were not persuaded by either argument but undecided.

Karima Brown, Political analyst

African National Congress' secretary general Gwede Mantashe will address a press conference later on Monday.
