Bad cost cutting decisions may be behind British Airways IT glitch - tech expert

A huge IT system failure over the weekend in the United Kingdom has affected British airways, leading to it cancelling all flights at London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

Arthur Goldstuck, Managing Director at WorldWideWorx says the crash at the airline is an indication of just how vulnerable people are to IT glitches and business strategies.

It's a question of being vulnerable to poor decision-making with regards to cost cutting because that's ultimately what appears to be what's behind the both the main IT system globally and the backup system could go down at the same time.

Arthur Goldstuck, Managing Director at WorldWideWorx

In 2016, the airline appointed a new CEO who came from a low-cost airline, where the emphasis was on cost cutting, adds Goldstuck

There are certain areas where you simply don't cut costs. The first one, in an airline, is safety on the plane itself and the second one is the IT system where you control everything.

Arthur Goldstuck, Managing Director at WorldWideWorx

Goldstuck adds that there is a mindset amongst some CEO's that suggests that IT is a background function.

IT systems are what make it all possible, Goldstuck goes on to say, and one of the real failures of this incident was the inability of the airline to communicate its problems to its customers.
