Over 90 000 pupils left stranded with no school transport this year

The Basic Education Department says it will embark on an evaluation process to assess the efficiency of its learner transport programme.

The Sowetan reported on Monday that over 90 000 pupil across the country have been left stranded because of problems with government’s scholar transport system.

The department's Elijah Mhlanga admits there have been challenges in addressing an increased demand and that they are working at resolving the matter.

We established that there are 97 714 learners who will not be able to benefit from the programme.

He says provinces need to have a look at the issue.

They need to relook their budgets and see where they can prioritise.

Mhlanga says the Eastern Cape, Kwazulu- Natal and the North West Province are largely affected, and they have a number of other problems such as infrastructure.
