230 000 Gauteng school applications, thanks to online admissions

The Gauteng Education Department has confirmed that the online admissions process to schools for next year has already seen 230 000 applications.

Spokesperson Oupa Bodibe says parents have responded well to the system, but the applications to township schools remain low.

He says extra measures will be put in place to remind parents to make their submissions before 12 June.

We really don't know what the issue because we have set up 80 admission centres. To our surprise, only 45 000 parents have really utilised those admission centres. We have spoken to the principals to try and contact the parents directly, especially of the learners in Grade 7.

Oupa Bodibe, spokesperson

We have seen some schools where only 50 people have applied, or only 10 people so we are putting extra measures to remind parents to apply before the 12 of June.
