State wants life sentence for Blöchliger murder accused

CAPE TOWN – The State and defence have made closing arguments in the case against the man accused of murdering Franziska Blöchliger.

In an admission read out by his attorney on Tuesday, Howard Oliver admitted to raping and killing the 16-year-old in Tokai forest in March last year.

He had previously denied the charges.

The State has called on the court to sentence Oliver to life imprisonment.

The prosecution also wants an additional 15 years on a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

In its closing arguments, the State says 16-year-old Blöchliger sustained horrific wounds, was suffocated, tied up and left in the bush.

The prosecution insists the accused had intended to kill the teenager given the gruesome nature of the attack.

The defence has told the court other factors had played a role in the crime but did not elaborate.
