Concern around safety of opposition party members after Mapaila threats

The fallout is still being felt following a demonstration outside the home of South African Communist Party Deputy (Sacp) secretary-general Solly Mapaila on Tuesday afternoon , calling on him to leave President Jacob Zuma alone.

In the context of public warnings about Mapaila's safety, the protestors - who claimed to be representing the MK Foundation - probably knew they would get a lot of attention.

Mapaila said he recognised two of the protestors, saying they were former MK comrades of his.

Despite the presence of a lone camera crew from ANN7 - further suggesting the demonstration may have been more of a publicity stunt than anything else - the SACP has increased security around Mapaila.

Meanwhile the Save South Africa Coalition have called on President Jacob Zuma to denounce the demonstration held in his name.

This is now what is characterising how members of the governing party speak to each other.

Solly Mapaila is a member of the ANC. Can you imagine what would happen to a member of the opposition? Or someone who the ANC has, what they think as hostile relations? It is absolutely incredible and astounding!

Brown says there needs to be a concerted push to end this type of intimidatory tactics. She reminded Xolani that just this week the South African Police Service initiated a task team to investigate political killings.

This is beginning to characterise and define the current climate in which people are having discussions. These are the signs of the mafia state so many speak of.
