School gets help to reduce hefty water and lights bill

Prof Thinus Booysen, senior lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch has been helping a local school reduce their water and energy consumption.

Booysen says when he saw that the school was paying a bill of R50 to R60 000 a month, he needed to find a solution.

While doing some research he discovered that this school did have water leakages costing around R7000 a month. He also looked at the energy use and discovered some unnecessary consumption which was also running up the bill.

It's not that the schools are malicious or that they don't care, it's just that they are not informed.

After having a conversation with the school's principal as well as teachers and providing assistance, Booysen says the school managed to see a reduction in water consumption of about 7 000 litres a day.

The crucial thing is being aware of what you are doing and how to avoid doing it wrong.
