Why you must think carefully before signing that gym contract

Gym memberships are tricky and often costly to get out of, explains consumer journalist Wendy Knowler.

Knowler advises that consumers should opt for the shortest term contract available to avoid future complications.

She explains that gym companies are entitled to charge a cancellation penalty, as much as 80% of the remaining subscriptions.

Look at that cancellation clause very carefully.

According to Knowler, the business model at gyms often capitalises on cancellation fees from fixed contracts.

She spoke about automated membership renewal, unsolicited subscription charges, and other contract-related queries.
