Charlotte Maxeke Hospital roof collapse due to contractor negligence

Five people were injured when concrete stones placed on a section of the roof by construction workers possibly caused the roof to collapse at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in March 2017.

Jacob Mamabolo, Gauteng Infrastructure Development MEC, confirms that the collapse was caused by the negligent overloading of rubble by the contractor involved.

We as public representatives entrusted with the lives of our people should not blink when people cut corners with shoddy and questionable work.

The service provider we had entrusted with water proofing was grossly negligent.

Mamabolo says the contractor failed to do accurate checks and levels of risk.

A proper risk analysis would have indicated that the roof was incapable of carrying such heavy material, he added.

They are now in processes of seeking an alternative dispute resolution with the service provider and will hold the contractor liable for all forms of liability.
