Education Department aware of increased abuse of Ritalin in private schools

The Department of Basic Education says it is aware of the increasing use of Ritalin by pupils in many private South African schools.

Lisa, a Johannesburg doctor, called into Xolani Gwala's show on Wednesday to raise concern over the matter.

The department's Elijah Mlhanga says substance abuse appears to be a recurring problem in most schools.

It is something that is not necessarily happening in private schools.

Elijah Mhlanga, Spokesperson

In some of our schools , teachers tell us they cannot teach after lunch because learners become hyper-active.

Elijah Mhlanga, Spokesperson

He says although it is difficult to control it's dispensation, they have alerted educators to the problem.

The problem with it is that Ritalin is a drug that is prescribed to treat ADHD to some learners, so it is available in that way and it should only be sue by those to whom it has been prescribed.

Elijah Mhlanga, Spokesperson

Our teachers have been alerted and we remind them again and again to be aware of any strange behavior by our learners.
