No change unless Parliament takes control of Eskom investigation - Mantshantsha

Deputy Editor at Financial Mail Sikhonathi Mantshantsha says he has no hope that a special probe into Eskom will lead to any kind of prosecution.

On Monday, the African National Congress' NEC announced that it wants Molefe’s appointment as CEO to be rescinded.

This after Minister Lynne Brown pronounced her own inquiry into allegations of state capture against Eskom and Molefe, including the power utility’s coal contracts.

There has been concern on whether a probe by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) into Eskom's controversial coal deal with Gupta-owned company Tegeta will be objective once President Jacob Zuma determines the scope of the investigation.

Mantshantsha says several past investigations failed because the culprits were at the helm.

He says nothing will change this time.

None of them went anywhere because the people in charge are the accused.

Sikhonathi Mantshantsha, Deputy Editor at Financial Mail

What is lacking is prosecution and taking action against the alleged offenders, there will be no change this time if parliament does not take control of this investigation and let it be transparent. I have no hope if it is taken to the SIU which has had its own investigation and nothing was done about it.

Sikhonathi Mantshantsha

When Jacob Zuma and Lynne Brown announce with much bravado that there will be an investigation, they are not the people to do such an investigation., parliament at this point is the place to conduct such an investigation.
