Opinion: The extent to which our country is being stolen is heartbreaking

702's Xolani Gwala says the latest reports on Gupta leaked emails are 'heartbreaking' and ask what now?

On Thursday Scorpio - the Daily Maverick’s newly launched investigative unit and amaBhungane confirmed they have access to 100 000 to 200 000 unique emails sent between the Gupta brothers, their associates and others.

The emails contain damning information revealing extent of the Gupta family's dealings with state-owned enterprises.

Some of these show how the Guptas have been diverting billions from Transnet’s purchase of locomotives to their offshore accounts.

It is indeed heartbreaking to read the extent to which our country is being stolen, how our children's future s being stolen right in front of our noses.

Xolani Gwala, 702 Breakfast anchor

As they say, evil thrives when good men just sit idle and do nothing about these issues, I think there is an opportunity for civil society to get involved and make sure for instance that the money that has been stolen is paid back into, that it goes back to the rightful owners, those being the people of South Africa.

Xolani Gwala, 702 Breakfast anchor

The whistle-blowers have played their part, now we need as a society to make sure we say how do we make use of this information so that we secure the future of our children.
