Why unemployment is escalating

Statistician-General Pali Lehohla says the increase demand of job seekers is only one reason for the rise in unemployment.

On Thursday, Lehohla announced the unemployment rate has increased to 27.7%, the highest it has been since September 2003.

You now have 9.3 million people who are not in any institution but are scraping and looking and wake wondering what the world will bring for them.

Pali Lehohla, Statistician-General

The economy is not creating the numbers required. We have 144 000 new jobs against 400 000 jobs that were lost. The other thing is that the unemployment rate is a factor of job search behaviour.
