Court orders Prasa to reinstate evicted Newtown residents

The City of Johannesburg says a court has ruled that evicted Newtown residents return to a building where they were thrown out earlier.

The City went to court to stop the eviction in the Bekezela informal settlement, where residents accused the Red Ants of damaging their property.

The Red Ants evicted at least 65 families from a building in Newtown following an order by the Sheriff of the court.

Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) ordered the eviction of its building that residents have been illegally occupying.

The court has ruled that Prasa is to reinstate the evictees back into the building this afternoon.

However, the City has accused the rail agency of failing to communicate that alternative accommodation was needed.

The City's Luyanda Mfeka says there was no effective communication to ensure that mechanisms were put in place.

Mfeka says the City will continue looking for alternative accommodation for an appropriate plan to be established.

Prasa spokesperson Nana Zenani says the Sheriff of the court hired the Red Ants for the eviction, and maintains that rail agency has distanced itself from the eviction violence.

We as Prasa cannot dictate as to who undertakes the eviction.

Nana Zenani, Prasa spokesperson

Zenani says that Prasa respects the court judgement and will abide by it.
