Police on the brink of breakthrough in KZN political killings - Mbalula

Police Minister Fikile Mbalula says the investigation into political killings in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is on the verge of breakthrough.

Police are following strong leads on the ground and I'm looking forward that very soon, we'll be making major breakthroughs and arresting major kingpins behind these killings.

Mbalula says the enlarged task team probing increasing political killings is a collaborate effort between different units and institutions, which report to him and the national police commissioner weekly.

The police minister says the task team's investigation is prosecutorially driven, in an effort to gaurantee criminal convictions.

Mbalula described the elusive nature of political killings and the need to make major arrests beyond the level of the hitmen.

It could be a matter of weeks or days, but we are on top of them. Very soon, there will be big announcements made around KZN to arrest those [linked to] political killings.

He also says an announcement will be made a soon as investigation into state capture, including the Gupta family, is concluded.

Mbalula also spoke about corruption within the police force, criminal syndicates, state capture and the apparent surge in gender-based violence cases being reported across South Africa.
