How Free State's Ace Magashule's family linked to Gupta companies #GuptaLeaks

The latest revelation from the Gupta leaked emails show how the Free State Provincial Government and the sons of Premier Ace Magashule appear to be heavily involved in the Gupta-owned companies.

Some of the emails were first published last week by the amaBhungane and Daily Maverick's Scorpio.

Monday's reports reveal how in much the same way that Duduzane Zuma was apparently groomed, Magashule’s sons were similarly primed to become Gupta intermediaries.

The report says notes and e-mails indicate that Magashule’s son Tshepiso started working for the Guptas as a consultant in November 2010, the year after Duduzane was brought into the Gupta fold. Tshepiso a director in only one Gupta company, was getting R90 000 a month.

The new reports also show that the Gupta family made a huge profit from a dairy farm that was actually paid for by the free state government.

amaBhungane's Sally Evans spoke to Stephen Grootes.

We have been writing about (this) since we first found about it in 2013. There is this farm in Vrede in the eastern Free State and millions of taxpayers money we hear are going to go into a project....Aall of this money is going into a dairy farm and next thing we hear is the Guptas are involved in this project.

Sally Evans, journalist at amaBhungane

The Guptas said they weren't at all involved and that actually they had done a small contract just for consulting work but subsequently with the Gupta leaks we have dozens of documents, emails and invoices which show that not only had by 2013 the free state government paid over about R124 million to go into this alleged dairy project but that R84 million had been sent to a company in the UAE that is basically run by a guy that we connected to the Guptas.

Sally Evans, journalist at amaBhungane

Of that 80 or so million rand maybe R30 million went to a pasteurising plant. We do not know what happened to the other R50 million that went to the UAE.

Sally Evans, journalist at amaBhungane

She says Thato and Tshepiso Magashule were both wined and dined, as well as flown overseas to Dubai.

In between all of those nice holidays and flying around the world, you would see emails between some of the Gupta senior executives sending emails to Tshepiso saying we need this invitation to this Indian dignitary signed by the premier, here is the format, literally all we need is the Premiers head letter....

Sally Evans, journalist at amaBhungane

This latest revelation has once again been linked to Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane who apparently traveled to Switzerland to help the Gupta's buy the Optimum coal mine.

His role actually was quite interesting in that he is from Vrede where this dairy farm happened to be set up. The project for this dairy farm was signed in mid 2012, and at the time Zwane was the MEC for agriculture and rural development in the Free State.

Sally Evans, journalist at amaBhungane

The Gupta family themselves haven’t formally responded to the emails saying it cannot be confirmed that these emails were in fact sent by the family.
