Helen Zille disciplinary hearing
Political analyst Prince Mashele says the Democratic Alliance has risked its chances of gaining black voters.

An announcement from the Democratic Alliance on Saturday suggested that Helen Zille, Premier of the Western Cape was going to be suspended from all party activity over her refusal to stop defending her tweet in which she said that colonialism did have some benefits.

The party then had to retract its earlier statement saying that in fact she was not yet suspended but that she had seventy-two hours to explain why she should not be suspended.

Then on Monday, the party confirmed that Zille will face a disciplinary hearing that will start on Friday.

Speaking to Stephen Grootes, host of the Midday Report, Prince Mashele, political analyst says there is tussle between the former white leader and current black leader.

For the first time the DA is now led by a black leader. South African's are looking at this and asking, is the black leader truly in charge.

Prince Mashele, political analyst

There are many members of the black middle class that are disgruntled with African National Congress (ANC) and who are looking for a new political home. They need to be convinced that the DA is a political home and is not a party masterminded by some white clique somewhere.

Prince Mashele, political analyst

Mashele goes on to question if the DA is representative of all South Africa and if there is an attempt by the old white leadership to control the party and undermine the leadership of Mmusi Maimane.

Mashele says Zille is responsible for the internal conflicts within the DA because of her tweet on colonialism.

The DA leadership goes around campaigning, it will have to explain, Zille stupid tweet.
