Renewable energy could displace Eskom by 2050

The large-scale deployment of renewable energy and gas could actually displace Eskom by the year 2050 or in just over 30 years time, argues the South African Renewable Energy Council.

Simon Chademana is from the Climate Justice and Energy campaign Groundworks. He says the affordable price of renewable may continue for a very long time.

As to when Eskom will be redundant...I think it's just a matter of time.

Simon Chademana, Climate Justice and Energy campaign Groundworks.

Speaking on claims that the power utility is dragging its feet in signing contracts with independent power producers, he says Eskom may be trying to stifle the growth of renewable energy.

The moment people begin to use their own energy or run their own energy, sooner or late you lose market and that is what Eskom is scared of.

Simon Chademana, Climate Justice and Energy campaign Groundworks.

We believe that Eskom's idea at the moment is that they are trying to drag their feet bringing in most independent power producers because sooner or later that may actually be the greater source of energy than their coal fired power plants so we believe that Eksom is actually trying to stifle the growth of renewable....

Simon Chademana, Climate Justice and Energy campaign Groundworks.
