SA's Nimuno Loop inventors battling global copy-cats

In March, Kieno Kammies spoke to industrial designer Max Basler about a product he and some colleagues at Chrome Cherry Design Studio had developed, the Nimuno Loop.

The product is a flexible self-adhering silicone tape covered in stipples so that it can be used with many brands of plastic building blocks such as products like Lego and Mega Bloks.

The prototype was showcased on the crowdfunding website Indiegogo and has proved hugely successful.

While it is scheduled for release in July, there are already knockoffs being sold on the internet.

We knew from past experience that if you have a successful product it does get knocked off very quickly....It is bigger than Chinese based websites, it is even on big websites like Amazon.com in America, e-bay.

It is worth fighting. Of course, there is a lot of money, it has cost us a lot of money in the last two months but it is clearing up and we managed to hold them back and fight them off. It is about the bigger territories, America and Europe and not so much about smaller unknown countries and small shops. It is the big retailers we are after and they are scared of the knock off's.
