Adam Alter is an Associate Professor in marketing and psychology at New York University's Stern School of Business.
In his book, _Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked, _Alter explains how behavioral addictions are now widespread, particularly with the adoption of newer more addictive social networking platforms, tablets and smartphones.
What an addiction is, is a pairing of this experience or ingestion of substance with a psychological need that needs to be met, that isn't met in any other way and it is the addictive experience that meets that need.— Adam Alter, author
With respect to behavior we are not talking about addictions that generally kill you or have major effects on your physiology. They tend to affect your social lives, your ability to work, your psychology or the way you perceive the world and so on.— Adam Alter, author
We need to develop very different strategies in dealing with these addictions and I think the key is to think of this in terms of say the environmental movement or nutrition. We need to carve out parts of the day or parts of the week where we say this is sacred time where I am not going to spend my time in front of devices.— Adam Alter, author
