Still no NGO contracts with Health Dept - Life Esidimeni family committee

The Life Esidimeni Family Committee says it's concerned that the Gauteng Health Department has still not drafted contracts with the NGOs that its transferred patients to.

More than 100 mentally ill patients died last year after being moved from Life Esidimeni facilities to various NGOs across the province which were later found to have been operating unlawfully.

The Health Ombudsman released his report into the circumstances around the deaths in February, prompting the transfer of patients to new facilities.

Eyewitness News reporter Masego Rahlaga has more on the story.

20 of the 27 NGOs that were found to be operating unlawfully have been closed, however, the family committee says it has concerns with the number because it says they have checked some of these NGOs and they are still open.

Masego Rahlaga, EWN reporter

Government still doesn't have service contracts with these NGOs and the family committee is concerned because if your loved one is at a facility where there is no contract between government and the NGO, how is government going to hold the NGO accountable if something bad happens.

Masego Rahlaga, EWN reporter

Some affected families say they have yet to hear from the South African Police Service after opening criminal cases.
