The Soul City Institute For Social Justice calling on the South African public to contribute to a national #SafeTaxisNow charter for women.
Many women and children who use public transport such as taxis are often exposed to gender-based violence in the form of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and rape.
The Soul City Institute for Social Justice together with other various women’s organisations are collaborating on a campaign that seeks to create a safe public transportation system for women.
The campaign is aimed at coming up with strategies to make public transport and taxi ranks safe for women. One of these strategies is developing a national charter to make taxis safer for women.

South Africa faces a large number of reported incidents of gender-based violence. Most of these women are unfortunately killed, raped and abused by the men in their lives.
Many reports of recent kidnappings, assaults, rapes and murders of women and children are allegedly at the hands of taxi drivers. Very few of these perpetrators are brought to book for their crimes, argues the Institute.
The Soul City Institute For Social Justice invites you to imagine with them what a safe and efficient public transport system should look like for women, particularly the taxi industry.
They are calling on the South African public to contribute to a national #SafeTaxisNow charter for women. This charter should stipulate the actions the Department of transport and Taxi Associations must take to guarantee women’s safety while accessing taxis.
