Knysna relief efforts kick off, SANDF to assist as fire continues

Relief efforts have begun after several homes and buildings were gutted by fire in Knysna on Wednesday.

Up to 10 000 residents were forced to evacuate their homes on Tuesday night as a result of runaway fires.

Three people have died. The cause of the fire is still unclear.

Some of the areas that have been hard hit include Belvedere and Brenton on Lake.

Officials have described this as the largest and most destructive fire in a built-up area in recent years.

The SANDF has been called in to assist. Resident Adrian Egerty describes how he lost everything.

It was I would think in a space of an half an hour, everything was pretty much gone.

Editor of the Knysna-Plett Herald, Elaine King says groups took refuge at the Knysna Yacht Club on Wednesday night.

I think it was midnight, the fire chief actually said that they just weren't coping and that he was dead on his feet and so were his men, so at this point they are still fighting fires.

I have been a journalist and editor in this country, I have seen everything but what happened last night almost felt like an apocalypse.
