Salga CEO Xolile George on how he has managed to turn the organisation around

This year marks the inaugural year of the SCoM in accordance with article 18 of the South African Local Government Association (Salga) Constitution.

The SCoM serves as a forum through which Executive Mayors and Mayors of Organised Local Government can consult one another in matters of common interest to improve governance and service delivery within Local Government.

The SCoM is scheduled to take place between Thursday and Friday , at the City of Cape Town Council Chambers. SALGA.

A membership of 278 municipalities nationally will interact with parliament, the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Cabinet as well as provincial legislatures.

Xolile George, Salga CEO joined Kienno live from the Salga offices.

George detailed how he has managed to turn the organisation around during his tenure.

Matters of governance, matters of administration, accountability were not really up in terms of priority and it required a lot of intervention in terms of stabilising the organisation.

One of the key priorities was conversations with municipalities because at that time they were looking for other options other than Salga...most of the cities were literally walking away. Membership of the organisation is back to its full capacity, a hundred percent and members are able to see value.

Xolile George, Salga CEO

We are beginning to show in a number of ways, the significance of municipalities in national discourse. Salga is now able to take matters to various forums where ministers are able to drive sector policies that impact in local government. At a global level, Salga is now a major player.
