"DA FedEx didn't want Zille issue to be sucked into leadership battles"

The Democratic Alliance announced on Wednesday that its Federal Executive has officially suspended its former party leader and premier of the Western Cape Helen Zille, because of her tweets about colonialism.

Zille is facing a disciplinary process after DA leader Mmusi Maimane lodged a complaint against her over a series of tweets in which she argued that not every aspect of colonialism was bad.

On Saturday Maimane announced that Zille was to be suspended. Then just hours later the Federal Executive released a statement saying the Western Cape leader had in fact been given 72 hours to explain why she should not be suspended over the matter.

Stephen Grootes spoke to DA federal council leader, James Selfe about the decision.

She has been suspended from party activities only....it does not affect her position as the premier, her membership of the cabinet and her membership of the Western Cape caucus.

James Selfe, DA Federal Council chair

This is the year in which we have all our provincial congresses, and mobilisation was starting to happen around this which became a proxy for other disagreements. We didn't want this issue to be sucked into leadership battles in particular provinces who were using this issue as a mechanism to mobilise.

James Selfe, DA Federal Council chair

We want the federal legal commission to be able to operate without fear or favor, so that Helen gets a fair trial without the benefit of massive mobilisation within the party.
