Disaster relief organisations and local government have been working hard this past week to alleviate some of the suffering of the Knysna fire victims, many of whom have lost everything in one of the worst fires to hit that area in years.
James-Brent Styan, Spokesperson at Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, says the fires that continue in the Knysna area are contained for now.
The latest information that i received shows that more than 400 houses have been completely destroyed in Knysna. The damage is significant. The infrastructure in the Knysna particularly is severely damaged.— James-Brent Styan, Spokesperson at Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell
Styan explains that the fires at this time of the year in the region are nothing unusual. He says what is unusual however is the 70 to 90 kilometre per hour gale force wind that swept through the area as a result of Tuesday evening's storm. Styan adds that reports of the raging fires being caused by arson are completely untrue.
