'Hawks must urgently investigate Gupta emails to restore public trust'

ANC NEC member Dr Mathole Motshekga has called for the prosecution of all those implicated in the state capture and Nkandla reports, in light of the leaked Gupta emails.

If we are serious about putting South Africa's interests first, we must take action.

He says failure to do so would mean the government was intent on subverting the constitution and trampling on the criminal justice system

Motshekga says the veracity of the Gupta emails is no longer in question and says that state institutions need to act in order to restore confidence in government at the criminal justice system.

There is enough evidence to say that this not a made up story. It should suffice for law enforcement officials to act.

The Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution (Casac) executive secretary Lawson Naidoo agrees with Motshekga and adds that the Hawks need to be forthcoming about their investigation.

Naidoo says the Hawks should urgently investigate the allegations emanating from leaked emails in order to restore public confidence.

According to Naidoo, it is concerning that the Hawks are still probing the veracity of the documents.

He says South Africans deserve to know about the progress of corruption investigations and says the silence of the Hawks undermines its credibility.

The pair spoke about what acting Hawks boss Yolisa Matakata must to in order to renew trust and the Hawks can be held accountable.

Take a listen to Naidoo and Motshekga in conversation:
