Head of SIU says claims of corruption are exaggerated

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) says it is aware of claims by staff who say they are being victimised for speaking out over alleged corruption in the unit.

Sources who spoke to the Sunday Independent allege that there are officials in the SIU selling and leaking information to suspects who are being investigated by the unit.

The disgruntled group of employees have apparently written to the Presidency about their concern.

Head of the SIU Advocate Andy Mothibi says the issue is being over exaggerated.

This has really been in my view, over exaggerated. I will start off with the allegation relating to some of our staff selling information, there is only one incident related to one staff in our offices in the KZN area.

Advocate Andy Mothibi, Head of the SIU

We had taken steps once we knew that this matter was reported to the Hawks by a whistle-blower... they opened and inquiry, registered in the 21 November 2016. We are still continuing to interact with the Hawks.

Advocate Andy Mothibi, Head of the SIU

Mothibi says he has not received any information over the letter addressed to the president.

He has denied allegations lodged against him. Staff have accused him of turning a blind eye to corruption but of appointing friends to senior positions without following proper procedures.

They also claim he is abusing SIU funds to buy protection from the National Health, Education and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu).

They told the Sunday Independant, Mothibi showered shop stewards with cash and paid for their travel, accommodation and subsistence allowance while they were doing work for the union in exchange for their protection.

That is totally inaccurate. We interact with the union in terms of the recognition agreement that we have with the trade unions, and part of the processes is when they attend to their own union representative matters they fund their activities, if there are initiatives initiated by the employer, the employer then funds their travel costs.

Advocate Andy Mothibi, Head of the SIU

I don't need union protection. We do not under any circumstances spend funds irregularly.
