Your current qualification might not be enough to get you a job - expert

There seems to be a growing trend among graduates and students who are mixing and matching their main qualification with another kind of training in a different field.

This is an argument brought forward by educational expert at the Independent Institute for Education, Wonga Ntshinga.

He says that it is no longer feasible just to keep one qualification and hope for a successful future.

As much as your vertical qualification is important, it is essential that you separate yourself from the rest. In that way, even if its a short course for that matter, it might open up doors for you.

He says people, especially students, need to be reminded that cognitive ability and aptitude come into play in most careers. Having the ability to be able to switch between thinking about multiple concepts at the same time is the way to go, he says.

It is for the universities to instill that in students and really emphasise that yes a qualification is important but you need to be cognisant of the challenges that face South Africa.
