Corruption began long before Polokwane - Jeremy Cronin

The South African Communist Party's Jeremy Cronin says the politicisation of what he describes as critical elements of the criminal justice system date back to before President Jacob Zuma's administration.

Responding to Thabo Mbeki's spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga's attack on the SACP and Blade Nzimande in the Sunday Times, the Deputy General Secretary says all sides need to account for the current political crisis.

Cronin explains how the corruption of state entities began even before 2009, and that the arms deal illustrates this.

We need to ask ourselves what contribution have we made to the current crisis. We need to answer that honestly for ourselves, but at the same time it does not help if others come in as if they were clean angels and did not have a contribution to make.

Jeremy Cronin, SACP Deputy General Secretary

Capture of our strategic priorities, the undermining of sovereignty, and of constitutionality, is not necessarily just about corruption. It is often just about the loss of strategic priorities and I think the arms deal illustrates that.

Jeremy Cronin, SACP Deputy General Secretary

Asked whether he regrets helping Zuma to power, Cronin says it was a mistake.

Clearly it was a mistake but lets not over personalise it as well. I think one of the mistakes that the SACP made was in personalising and imagining that there was a great man who would be a savior.
