Crowdfunding platform Backabuddy vetting online campaigns for Knysna fire relief

Over 35 campaigns have been registered by Knysna fire victims on the crowdfunding platform Backabuddy.

There have also been several champion campaigns created by others wanting to raise funds on victims' behalf.

Backabuddy COO Catherine du Plooy says Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters has raised over R250 000 for her hometown so far.

However, Du Plooy explains that the platform has had to intensify the verification process to avoid fraudulent campaigns.

We've had to take it a step further with the fires now.

She advises that there is a different procedure in place for registered NPO's versus individual families.

Individuals have to provide a copy of their ID, at least two contactable references and fire victims have had to provide photographic evidence before campaigns are made live.
