Why women should consider taking up self-defence classes

On Sunday, the 1in9 Campaign, i-LEAD and Soul City Institute hosted an empowering self defence class for women as part of the #SafeTaxisNow campaign.

Around 40 women filled a room at Wits University’s Robert Sobukwe building.

Azania Mosaka spoke to Fisha Patak-Harie Founder of i-Lead about how she left her IT job to start the classes.

She shares how she was nearly abducted in 2012 and the importance of self defence skills.

When an attack happens you have a few seconds to act and if your body has trained in some sort of self-defense you have muscle memory to aid you and essentially you instinctively react and it gives you those few seconds to get yourself to safety.

Fisha Patak-Harie, Founder of i-Lead

Currently we schedule classes around Johannesburg, we started operating mainly at shelters for abused women and survivors of human trafficking. Thereafter we took it to the community and started offering free classes to women in different communities.
