Knysna fires contained, but not yet controlled

The Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning says the Knysna fires have been contained but are not yet fully controlled.

We're comfortable to say that the fires have been contained... We don't know about controlled because if the wind picks up it could flare up again.

James-Brent Styan, Spokesperson of the MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning

The fires have seen an unprecedented rescue effort, explains the department's James-Brent Styan.

I'm looking at it as an absolute miracle. What was pulled off here is unprecedented.

James-Brent Styan, Spokesperson of the MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning

There's no way that there has been a bigger disaster rescue effort in this country. 10 000 people had to be evacuated from various areas across the region under enormously difficult conditions.

James-Brent Styan, Spokesperson of the MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning

While it is a tragedy, it could have been much worse.

Styan says the two main priorities are to ensure that the fire is brought under control and that the humanitarian relief continues.

He has thanked volunteers, firefighters, respondents and other officials for their work in bringing the situation under control.
