#KnysnaFire: Expert warns of fires being rekindled

According to the Western Cape disaster management officials, the fire that broke in Knysna last week has been described as the biggest disaster rescue operation in South African history.

The fire spanned at least 100 kilometres, and was fought by a team of 1 106 firefighters from the province and elsewhere.

Dr Kelvin Kemm, CEO at Nuclear South Africa and a pyrotechnician has been writing about the fires in the Western Cape.

He says people need to watch out for the rekindling of the fire when everyone thinks it has died down.

What happens is the first fire would runaway burning the available wood using oxygen which of course is essential.

What happens is chunks of wood get baked into charcoal and greenwood gets baked dry. In the number of hours when the oxygen can re-penetrate, you have an ideal situation for the fire to restart...
