Ray Hartley, editor of the Rand Daily Mail details Ben Ngubane's rise to power and his checkered career.

In an unexpected move, Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown announced the resignation of Eskom board chairperson, Dr Ben Ngubane late on Monday evening.

Ray Hartley, editor of the Rand Daily Mail, gave The Midday Report's, Stephen Grootes a brief history of Ngubane's career. Hartley says Ngubane was minister of health in Kwa Zulu-Natal.

He was trusted by the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader, Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

Hartley explains that Ngubane was a pretty moderate guy, always willing to talk and become a minister in Nelson Mandela's Cabinet.

Because the African National Congress (ANC) absorbed some IFP members, Ngubane then met and worked closely with President Jacob Zuma, he explains.

Zuma called on him eventually to chair a lot of the state enterprises.

Ngubane will be remembered as Zuma's corporate hatchet man, the guy that got sent to realign state enterprises, with the larger project, that we now know as 'state capture', says Hartley.

He adds that the now ex-Eskom board chairperson was aggressive in promoting and overpaying axed South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) COO, Hlaudi Motsoeneng.
