[LISTEN] Caller wants immediate redeployment of amaberete in Alexandra township

It is reported that Police Minister Fikile Mbalula's has decided to redeploy members of the South African Police Service (Saps) Tactical Response Team in the townships. The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) are fully behind the minister's decision.

Richard Mamabolo, Spokesperson at Popcru, spoke to Talk Radio 702 host, Azania Mosaka about this.

Mamabolo says they fully support Mbalula's decision. He adds that one of the challenges of the tactical response team is that their structures aren't fully functional while being expected to deal ordinary crime prevention.

On the other side of the coin, we have seen an increase in criminal activities within our townships.

Richard Mamabolo, Spokesperson at POPCRU

Mamabolo says community members have been actively reporting on crimes in their residential areas but have often been met with lack of response at times from Saps.

My only problem with the 'amaberete' is their abuse of power.

Madoda, caller

I would prefer both because the police are under staffed.

Mabuye, caller

They must come clean up the Alexandra township.
