Military could assist as forensic pathologists strike

The Gauteng Health Department says it is hoping to rope in military health services to assist, as forensic pathologists at the Diepkloof Services Centre in Soweto continue their strike.

The officers have gone on a strike this week, affecting service delivery and causing some families to wait longer for the release of the bodies of their relatives.

The workers are demanding a salary hike and a danger allowance, among other things.

This woman says there has been little communication since her brother's death and they have waited two weeks for his body to be released.

We were planning to bury him on Saturday and nothing could be done over the weekend, we have to take him from Soweto to East London. We are sitting here frustrated and worried.

Gauteng Health MEC Gwen Ramokgopa says they have met with workers to try and resolve the matter.

A meeting scheduled on Monday however, hit a deadlock.

We acknowledge that perhaps we needed to make other interventions and by yesterday we had looked at the assistance if the military health services and we are really looking forward to having a team form there to assist by today as we try and deal with the deadlock.
