Tips for making the perfect mixtape this Father's Day

At some point, we all had a stack full of cassette tapes. Either purchased with pocket money, gifted for birthdays and Christmases, or created by listening out for your favourite song on the radio, and then leaping across the room to hit “RECORD” on your tape player.

Often most prized were mixtapes – painstakingly crafted cassettes with carefully lettered track lists and clever titles. These were cherished gifts – to yourself or to your crush or best friend – or the anthems to a summer holiday, school dances, or your wedding planning.

There was a certain ritual to making a perfect mixtape, one that could take hours to finish. Maybe even days, depending on how much you wanted to impress the recipient.

Then cassettes were replaced by compact discs, which then became iTunes playlists and folders on a harddrive. Convenient? Yes.

But nothing beats the physical act of giving over an actual mixtape - and if you’re struggling with an idea for Father’s Day, why not burn the dad in your life a CD?

Here’s some tips for the perfect mix:

Scope out his collection

What music does he like? Is he an Elvis fan, or a Queen man? Guns ‘n Roses, or Dolly Parton? Knowing his taste is key.

Select a basic theme

Is it a collection of his favourite songs? Or songs that make you think of him? Perhaps it’s songs about dads? Pick a theme!

Draft a track list

John Cusack’s character in High Fidelity said it best: “Making a tape is like writing a letter. There’s a lot of erasing and rethinking and starting again.”

Thankfully these days it’s as easy as hitting “Delete” if you change your mind, but the principle is a good one to follow! Plus, knowing your plan saves you spending money on tracks when purchasing online.

Keep it short

Sure, you can have 400 songs on an iTunes playlist, but that doesn’t mean you should! Max it out at 90 minutes.

Think about the order

Listen to the songs in order before you burn the CD to get a sense of the flow – but make sure you start and end with a bang. You need their attention!

Name and decorate your mixtape

The perfect title and case decoration was always an integral part of making and giving a mixtape – make sure you spend some time on this important tradition! “Dad’s Mix” is descriptive, sure. But you can do better.

For the music lover dad in your life, it's a stellar gift.

Along with the perfect mixtape, you could also pick up tickets to 20th Century Countdown, now showing at The Barnyard Theatre at Silverstar Casino.

With playlists stretching across boy bands, pop divas, reggae and rock and roll, 20th Century Countdown is the ultimate mixtape celebration, made up of memories, good times, and music that will never die.
